Where did the crab meat go?

Were you wondering where the crabmeat went at the market? Well, for the first time ever, the Louisiana Wildlife and Fisheries Commission closed crab season temporarily. Timed to coincide with the regular season lull, the closure runs for 30 days beginning the third Monday in February for the next three years. This will allow crab populations to rebound from over-harvesting! According to Pete Gerica of Pete and Clara’s Seafood, a long time CCFM vendor who is also on the advisory committee, this management step had to be taken in order to ensure the Marine Sustainability Certification (MSC) of the fishery, which is an important certification for sale of crab meat from Louisiana to major retailers.

Unfortunately, this means no crab will be available until March 21st. Hopefully, this will ensure bigger, better and tastier crabs in March and the ongoing success of this Louisiana seafood staple.
