Fresh Item of the Week

fresh item of the week

We have so much be thankful for at the Crescent City Farmers Market. While farmers markets in other parts of the country are winding down, ours is bursting with locally-grown produce: collards, mustards, turnip greens and Tuscan kale, tender lettuces, kumquats, Meyer lemons, grapefruit, satsumas, early season Ponchatoula strawberries, pecans, broccoli, cauliflower, sweet potatoes and crazy looking cushaw and cucuzza squash, not to mention the Louisiana seafood, grass-fed meat and dairy we enjoy year-round. We're especially thankful for the folks who grow, raise and catch these local foods. Happy Thanksgiving everyone!

Tuesday Market, November 23, 2010 | 9 am - 1 pm

Uptown New Orleans | 200 Broadway Street at the River

The Tuesday market before Thanksgiving is one of our favorites - swarms of shoppers scratching items off epic grocery lists: Louisiana shrimp, gumbo crabs, smoked sausage, plenty of butter and cream, Plaquemines Parish citrus, including kumquats to dress up the holiday bird, sweet potatoes, cauliflower to whip (in lieu of mashed potatoes), pecans, chevre and lettuce mix, at least two pies from Ms. Chauvin, flowers for the table... Come early. There's bound to be a crowd!

We'll all be doing plenty of cooking soon enough, so no need to mess with lunch this Tuesday. Satsuma is back at the market this week with quiche, curried pumpkin soup, turkey sandwiches on ciabatta, kale and Swiss chard salad, apple pie, pumpkin pie and hot apple cider.

Thursday Market, November 25, 2010 | 3 pm - 7 pm

Mid-City New Orleans | 3700 Orleans Avenue at the Bayou

Happy Thanksgiving! There won't be a market this Thursday, but baker Graison Gill of Babcia Kubiak is still planning on firing up the oven. Call him at 504.236.6747 or email to place Thanksgiving orders and discuss delivery options for Louisiana pecan pie, Ponchatoula strawberry tarts, Folsom sweet potato tarts, apple tarts and an assortment of hand-hewn breads.

Saturday Market, November 27, 2010 | 8 am - 12 pm

Downtown New Orleans | 700 Magazine Street at Girod

Saturday Market is on! Those kitchen knives are sure to have gotten a workout during Thanksgiving dinner prep. Bring them to the market this Saturday for sharpening while you shop for much needed leafy greens after days of holiday feasting.

Recipe of the Week

Chef Carolyn Shelton's recipe for Angelina's Poor Man's Gumbo with Filè calls for a 5lb chicken or hen, cut into pieces, but leftover Thanksgiving turkey works just fine, depending on how much is left-over, of course. Turkey gumbo is a great way to get the most out of a Thanksgiving bird. It also freezes well, making it perfect for impromptu holiday entertaining.
