Fresh Item of the Week

fresh item of the week

There are just five days left to submit Crescent Fund proposals. Those who are vendors at a local public market (not just the CCFM, so please help us spread the word) or are involved in a project aimed at improving our local community (past recipients include Hands on New Orleans, R.U.B.A.R.B., Trouser House, the Rethinkers and the Good Shepherd School) have until this Friday, June 3 to submit proposals. The application is short and simple: what good could you do with up to $500, and how would you repay our market community? Click here to learn more and SUBMIT YOUR PROPOSAL BY THIS FRIDAY.

Tuesday Market, May 31, 2011 | 9 am - 1 pm

Uptown New Orleans | 200 Broadway Street at the River

All those participating in the 1st annual New Orleans Eat Local Challenge (eat only foods grown, raised or produced within 200 miles of NOLA for the month of June), come to the CCFM this Tuesday to stock your fridge and swap locavore recipes with fellow shoppers. Are you up for the challenge? Click here for more details, including a resource guide and recipe forum.

5 Fifty 5 makes its final appearance under the GPS tent this Tuesday with summer lobster gazpacho, muffalettas, chocolate hermit bars and blondie brownies. A big thank you to Chef Mark Quitney and his culinary team for joining us at the market this month, and for supporting local farmers.

Thursday Market, June 2, 2011 | 3 pm - 7 pm

Mid-City New Orleans | 3700 Orleans Avenue at the Bayou

If it's been a while since you've been to the Thursday Market, we've grown! A quick scan of the fresh locally grown produce available at the market last week: first of the season Chilton County peaches, blueberries, every shape and color of heirloom tomatoes, Silver Queen corn, bell peppers, cucumbers, kale, pattypan squash, haricots verts, carrots and fresh herbs. Come meet our new vendors this Thursday.

Saturday Market, June 4, 2011 | 8 am - 12 noon

Downtown New Orleans | 700 Magazine Street at Girod

Great news, Marketeers! This summer we're hosting kids events at the CCFM every Saturday, not just the first Saturday of the month. This Saturday we kick off our summer-long series of "Market Day Trips" kids events with squash car races. That's right, we're building race cars out of locally grown squash! We'll highlight a different parish or county in our local food region and the foods that are grown and raised there each weekend. Come win cool prizes and learn all about our delicious local landscape.

Recipe of the Week

The Chilton County peaches and Silver Queen corn are both perfectly sweet right now. We love this Corn and Peach Salsa with any number of things we might throw on the grill. A little sweet, a little spicy, this salsa is delicious with chicken from Joe Dobie (Tuesdays) and Adam Aucoin (Saturdays).
