Fresh Item of the Week

fresh item of the week

We're seeing red at the market these days! Tomatoes, radishes, strawberries and swiss chard are adding color to vendor tables and shopping bags all over our markets. The weather is warming up, making this the perfect time for salads, which we prefer to eat al fresco. These colorful fruits and veggies are a great way to liven them up. Radishes are delicious and healthy. They're a good source of riboflavin, vitamin B6 and calcium, as well as dietary fiber, vitamin C, folate and potassium. Grab a bunch, thinly slice and add them to a piece of buttered toast for a fresh, delicious breakfast.

Tuesday Market, March 20, 2012 | 9 am - 1 pm

Uptown New Orleans | 200 Broadway Street at the River

The sun is out and the heat is on here in New Orleans. Cool down with one of Amanda Caraval's refreshing popsicles or juices. Her avocado pops are a favorite with the CCFM staff, and you can nearly always find one of us drinking a bottle of her fresh juices under the welcome tent. Using local produce and honey along with well water, Amanda's treats are a sweet way to get some fruit and veggies into your diet and keep cool. You can find Amanda at all three locations of our market.

Another week, another great lunch from Fat Hen Grocery! This week, they delight with BBQ smoked okie round steak "bologna" sandwiches with mustard slaw, Thai-style cucumbers, house-smoked pit baked beans and freshly baked espresso-chocolate chip cookies. Come grab a plate and enjoy the weather!

Thursday Market, March 22, 2012 | 3 pm - 7 pm

Mid-City New Orleans | 3700 Orleans Avenue at the Bayou

After you hit the market this Thursday evening, come support our friends at the Edible Schoolyard New Orleans by attending "An Edible Evening", a garden party and fundraiser benefiting the organic gardening and educational program featured in five public charter schools operated by FirstLine Schools. Tickets are still available. Come celebrate the great work these kids are doing!

Saturday Market, March 24, 2012 | 8 am - 12 noon

Downtown New Orleans | 700 Magazine Street at Girod

This week is chock full of delicious events for great causes! After the market Saturday, head over to City Pork (a.k.a. City Park) for Hogs for a Cause, a BBQ competition whose proceeds benefit pediatric cancer research. Some of our favorite restaurants and chefs will be competing, and our own Emery Van Hook will serve as one of the judges. What a tasty week for food lovers in the Crescent City! Dying to make some of your very own award-winning BBQ? Justin Pitts, one of our meat vendors, has just the stuff you need. Justin is often at our Tuesday and Saturday markets. Stop by and see what you can get cookin'.

Recipe of the Week

We're deep into the Lenten season and always looking for new ways to enjoy fresh Louisiana seafood. Pick up some crabmeat this week and try this Crabmeat Caribe, recipe courtesy of our good friends at Galatoire's.
