Fresh Item of the Week

fresh item of the week

Our friends at Louisiana Public Health Institute (LPHI) recently rolled out a fantastic new program - Txt4Health, a free mobile phone-based health information service that helps people in the Greater New Orleans area learn about their risk for type 2 diabetes. To sign up, text HEALTH to 300400. The program is designed to help individuals understand their risk for type 2 diabetes, and become more informed about steps they can take to lead healthy lives by using a free risk assessment tool. Thanks, LPHI, for another great resource for those looking to live healthier, more active lives in here in New Orleans!

Tuesday Market, April 3, 2012 | 9 am - 1 pm

Uptown New Orleans | 200 Broadway Street at the River

We're excited to welcome our Uptown neighbor the Audubon Zoo to our Tuesday market with their ZooDoo Gold! Created on Audubon Zoo grounds, ZooDoo Gold compost is made from the zoo's plant clippings, tree chippings, Live Oak leaves, shredded office paper, shredded cardboard boxes, coffee grinds (with the appropriate acidic base), Audubon Tea Room food scraps and "contributions" from their zebra, ostrich and elephants. The zoo will be at our Tuesday market every other week, starting this week, this spring, so be sure to come by and grab a bag of this great new product.

green plate special

Thanks to Fat Hen Grocery for a great month! This Tuesday we welcome Greg and Mary Sonnier of The Uptowner to the Green Plate Special tent. On this week's menu: potato and leek au gratin, gumbo z'herbes, smoked pulled pork with smothered cabbage and rice, honey pecan squares and banana cupcakes with cream cheese icing offerings. We can't wait to see what they'll cook up the rest of the month!

Thursday Market, April 5, 2012 | 3 pm - 7 pm

Mid-City New Orleans | 3700 Orleans Avenue at the Bayou

We're compost crazy this week at the CCFM! Thursday we welcome Crescent City Compost Coalition to the market. Alyssa Denny will educate folks about how to compost at home. Come by the market and learn how you can start wasting less and growing more! Crescent City Compost Coalition will be at our Thursday market for the month of April.

Saturday Market, April 7, 2012 | 8 am - 12 noon

Downtown New Orleans | 700 Magazine Street at Girod

We were thrilled to see dark honey on Paw Paw's table last weekend. Did you know that dark honey has more antioxidants than lighter colored honey (an anti-oxidant powerhouse to begin with!)? Darker colored honey also contains more minerals - mainly iron, copper and manganese, which makes it especially fit for medicinal purposes. Add it to your morning coffee, tea or spring cocktail, slather some on toast, or even apply it to a sunburn. Grab a jar from Paw Paw this Saturday and let the healing begin!

Recipe of the Week

Strawberries and honey go together like...well, strawberries and honey. Add a refreshing kick to your next meal with this Strawberry Wine & Raw Honey Granita - perfect for a Sunday brunch or midweek happy hour on the porch.
