Fresh Item of the Week

fresh item of the week

Best wishes for a happy and healthful 2013! Given that we live in a region with a year-round growing season, it's easy for us to enjoy healthy, locally-raised foods all year! Visit any of our three weekly markets to kick off a delicious 2013!

Tuesday Market, January 7, 2013 | 9 am - 1 pm

Uptown New Orleans | 200 Broadway Street at the River

Tuesdays are bursting with gorgeous, greenhouse-grown tomatoes. From low acid yellow tomatoes and sweet grape tomatoes, to meaty heirlooms and green tomatoes, we've got your every tomato need covered. Tomatoes are super high in winter cold-busting vitamin C and the heart healthy antioxidant lycopene. Visit our Tuesday market (Thursday and Saturday markets too) to stock up on this locally-grown super food.

green plate special

We're happy to have Chef Anne Churchill back at the Green Plate Special tent for the month of January. If you missed Chef Anne's demo Saturday (or if you just can't get enough of her delicious, healthy cooking), be sure to visit her at Tuesday markets this month. This week, warm your bones with kale and lentil soup with Meyer lemon; wild boar curry or red curry tofu with coconut rice and mung bean salad; goat cheese and caramelized onion tarts; and raw kale salad with carrot, hemp and chia seeds, dulce and pecan vinaigrette. Top it all off with a slice of southern brown sugar cake with Shaker Meyer lemon custard.

Thursday Market, January 10, 2013 | 3 pm - 7 pm

Mid-City New Orleans | 3700 Orleans Avenue at the Bayou

Visit Vintage Garden's tent at our Tuesday and Thursday markets for a bevy of harder to find, locally-grown herbs and produce, including fresh ginger and fresh turmeric. In addition to their unique flavors, these two rhizomes (the underground stem) are useful in a medicinal capacity. Turmeric is known as a great anti-inflammatory, while ginger is often used to settle upset stomachs. Check out the recipe for one of Chef Anne's fresh juices that uses both.

Saturday Market, January 12, 2013 | 8 am - 12 noon

Downtown New Orleans | 700 Magazine Street at Girod

Did you know that beets are nutritional superstars? In addition to their earthy, sweet taste, they deliver an alphabetical range of vitamins and minerals, including vitamins A, C and K, as well as folate, which helps with the production of new cells and magnaese, which is necessary for healthy brain function, strong bones and blood sugar regulation. Don't love the beet root? Beet greens are even better for you than the roots! Visit Saturday and Tuesday market vendors Timmy Perilloux and the Monica family to get your fill!
