Carnival season officially kicked off January 6 and the bakers at the CCFM all have king cakes available for market pick up and special order. Lisa Barbato of Rivista bakes both traditional and French-style cakes. Pick up a small one or just a slice at our Saturday market, or special order a large one by calling 504-858-0798. Forte Grove Bakery's Galette des Rois French cakes come complete with a ceramic feve (for the large size). Small cakes are available at our Thursday market and large cakes can be ordered by calling 225-266-9480. Windfield Farms has traditional king cakes available at both our Tuesday and Saturday markets. For special orders, call 985-515-6109.

This weather has us craving soup. Whether you want to pick up ready-made soup (check with Vintage Garden or Pesto Paul) or make your own with seasonal, local vegetables, the CCFM has everything you need. Greens, root vegetables, fresh herbs and spices, tomatoes, chickens... even a baguette or loaf of artisanal bread and cheese for your grilled cheese side.

Last week we were all warmed on a chilly, rainy day by Chef Anne Churchill's delicious curries. This week come out to the market for more healthy lunch options: roasted ginger and carrot soup, strawberry salad with Meyer lemon vinaigrette, Seitan stew with root vegetables, homey pot roast and mashed potatoes, goat cheese and caramelized onion quiche, and for dessert, strawberry shortcake with freshly whipped cream.

Raise your hand if you made a New Year resolution to eat healthier? One great way to do this is by adding fresh seafood to your diet. Seafood is low in fat, high in protein and packed with powerhouse omega-3 fatty acids. Fish, shrimp and crabmeat are all high in vitamin B-12, which helps neurological functions and blood formation. Some nutritionists even call B-12 "brain food" for its benefits We in Louisiana know how delicious our fresh local seafood is. The health boosts are lagniappe! Clara Gerica has fresh seafood at our Thursday market, and is always happy to talk about preparation, how her husband catches it, and all the reasons she loves it.

Tomatoes in winter?! At the Crescent City Farmers Market, we're lucky to have two hothouse tomato growers supplying us with beautiful red (and yellow, and green, and purple) tomatoes even in the throes of winter. Delicious sliced in salads, stewed into fresh pasta sauce, or scrambled into eggs, tomatoes are lycopene, vitamin C and calcium boosters, and a delicious way to fend off the winter blues!

Did you know that sheepshead is also known as sea bream? Whatever you call this local fish, we call it delicious! This Sauteed Seabream with Tomato Sauternes Butter showcases our local catch, market tomatoes and spinach in a fresh, unique way.
