Crescent City Farmers Market unveils 2013 market token honoring Jim Core

Crescent City Farmers Market unveiled it’s 2013 market token on June 8, honoring farmer Jim Core (February 7, 1941 - August 25, 2012).

Jim was a market favorite, with chefs and market shoppers in New Orleans and Covington searching out his produce and his memorable voice. A military veteran, we first met Jim via sculptor Arthur Silverman when he and his dad were farming part-time. In the Fall of 1995 he decided to farm full time, becoming one of Crescent City Farmers Market’s first and longest running vendors. His kale was the stuff of legends, and his Kale Jambalaya has been duplicated on menus all over the city.

Jim’s wife of 41 years, Gladys, was on hand as the token was unveiled. Gladys and her sister Gaye continue to farm and attend the Saturday market, while Jim’s grandson, AJ, sells at the Tuesday and Thursday markets, continuing this wonderful family farming tradition.

Each year the Crescent City Farmers Market selects a local food hero to feature on wooden tokens that may be purchased at the market welcome tent using credit or debit cards, then spent with vendors at the market. Other local food heroes memorialized on CCFM tokens include Cajun cook Eula Mae Doré (1929-2008), Commander Palace Chef Jamie Shannon (1961-2001), Mississippi farmer and CCFM vendor James “Billy Corn” Burkett (1928-1995) and cooking school pioneer Lee Barnes (1951-1992).
