Market Match Kick-off!

Fresh & Local

In early celebration of National Farmers Market Week, kicking off this Saturday, August 1st – Saturday, August 8th, Market Umbrella is pleased to announce the roll-out of our Market Match program! At all four of our Crescent City Farmers Market locations, all SNAP (food stamp) purchases will be matched dollar for dollar up to the first twenty dollars for tokens for the purchase of fresh fruits and vegetables. We are thrilled to offer this incentive program to the public through funds from the USDA’s Food Insecurity Nutrition Incentive (FINI) program, authorized in the 2104 Farm Bill. This program will allow us to increase access to fresh fruits and vegetables for SNAP eligible families and put the funds in the hands of our small family farms. This exciting program will allow us to extend our shopper base and introduce more new shoppers to shopping at market. In addition, we’ll be giving daily market tours for new SNAP shoppers and distributing seasonal cooking guides. If you or anyone you know qualify for SNAP benefits, please feel free to take advantage of this exiting program or share the information with someone who will. For more information on the FINI initiative click here, and for more information on our Market Match program feel free to contact us via email at markets@marketumbrella.org or by phone at (504) 861-4485.

Pick of the Week: Marketeers Activity!

Bring the kids to market in a smock this Saturday because we’re breaking the paint back out and are going to be making some more vegetable-end art! We hate letting fruit and veggie scraps go to waste so if you’re not eating them or using them for compost, let’s get creative with them!

Tuesday’s Green Plate Special

It’s been a pleasure as always having Pizza Domenica out at market as our Green Plate Special for the month of July. If you’ve come out to market and like what you tasted from the Pizza Domenica team, be sure to swing by and visit them at their 4933 Magazine St. location for some of the finest Italian fare in town. Their last menu for the month will be a Melon Soup, Shrimp Roasted Pepper and Asparagus Frittata, and Peach and Ginger Aqua Fresca. Be sure to come on out and grab one more plate from Pizza Domenica! Stay tuned for La Cocinita next week.
