The Grape of the South

Fresh & Local

Fruit is rare in Louisiana this time of year, but we do have the “Grape of the South,” also known as muscadines!

Muscadines have been gathered for centuries in our region to make jams, jellies, preserves, and even wine. They are a dark purple color grape and grow wild on vines. Their taste is a musky sweet and sour (hence the name) and nothing like the grapes you’re used to, since their skin is thick and slightly bitter. And of course they are nutritious! Muscadines are filled with fiber and protein and are low in calories.

Find muscadine grapes at our Tuesday and Saturday markets. Ask our vendors and staff members for their favorite ways to prepare them!
