A Homage to Louisiana Seafood

Growing up just outside of the Bonnet Carré Spillway, I spent my childhood in a flat boat with my father. I can still tell you all the best fishing holes and where to hit the motherload of fat blue crabs, even after 15 years. A spot that specifically comes to mind punctures my memory with the smell of creosote on the tracks where the railroad meets the lake. On a cool day this time of year you could happen upon hundreds of crabs basking in the sunlight. My father and I would string chicken necks along the water and reel them in, coming home with five or six dozen, easily. A long day in the Spillway meant inviting the neighbors over for dinner and chasing my mom with a live one, as she is from Texas and terrified of “bugs”. These rituals of catching, cooking our bounty, and sharing with friends and family created an untouchable idea of seafood for me. We did not eat seafood unless we caught it ourselves or my dad got it from his “padna.”

As an adult who has lost the finesse of throwing a line, seafood became a special occasion meal. That is, until I started shopping at the Crescent City Farmers Market. The market features three prominent Louisiana seafood vendors, each with a specialty: Pete and Clara’s Seafood, Four Winds Seafood, and Des Allemands Outlaw Katfish. A one-stop shop for all of your favorites, per seasonality, including: gulf shrimp, blue crabs, catfish and drum, frog legs, and crawfish, just to name a few. The fisherwomen who represent these businesses at the market are strong, intelligent and wildly experienced. They have this instinctual knowledge of the water and the creatures that inhabit it. On any given day you could ask where the shrimp were caught, how to pick a crab effectively, or how to perfectly filet a fish and they will have an answer right away. So while I may spend the occasional day at the dock, I know that if I come up empty-handed, I can feel the same satisfaction by purchasing it at the market. CCFM tragically and suddenly lost an important part of this trifecta of local seafood when Clara Gerica passed away last Monday morning. Please join us in remembering her and in supporting the Gerica family through these times. The Gerica's plan to return to market, but we know it will never be the same.

Baby Ginger

Poche Family Farm has a new item to keep an eye out for - baby ginger! Where do we begin? Use it for cooking, soups, stir-fry, smoothies or juicing, and in your favorite sweet treat. Baby ginger has a mild, warm and tangy bite, but subtly sweet taste - perfect for fish. Ginger can also be used in several other ways to treat inflammation, upset stomach, and improve your risk of heart disease. Find this tasty jack of all trades at the Tuesday market.

It’s Not Easy Being Green

With fewer days to maturity (the time between planting and harvest), leafy greens start popping up at the end of summer. Look out for cooking mustards of the green, broadleaf and curly varieties as well as salad friendly mizuna and ruby streaks which are beautiful, mild and more tender. Not surprisingly, asian greens are also heat and humidity tolerant and so it is around now that we start seeing bok choy, tatsoi, pac choi and tender komatsuna, a mild mustard as close to spinach as you’ll get in our hot summers. When the cooler fall days become more frequent is when you’ll begin seeing the chard, collards, and kale that are generally available all through fall, winter and early spring.

Vendor of the Week:
Pete and Clara’s Seafood

As many of you know, our long time vendor Clara of Pete and Clara’s Seafood passed away last Monday, September 11th, at her home in New Orleans. The Gericas have always been, and will remain, a fundamental pillar in the growth and stability of our market. Clara was a friend to all and only had the the best interests for others in mind, making her a great vendor representative at CCFM. She will be dearly missed, there's no doubt about it. Sending all the love to Mr. Pete and Chris, and her friends and family.

If you are interested in donating to the Gerica family to help cover funeral expenses via Crescent Fund please visit the welcome tent at the market or our website for more details. Market Umbrella’s Crescent Fund provides relief for our vendors and farmers directly. Funds raised are allocated based on need and used to help vendors get back on their feet.
