Title: Farmers Market Returns to Mid-City

When the Crescent City Farmers Market regrouped after Hurricane Katrina, one of the casualties was our popular Thursday evening market at the American Can Co. apartment building. The neighborhood has been gradually rebounding in the years since the storm, and now, thanks to Cork & Bottle Fine Wines proprietor Jon Smith, it's getting its market back, too.

The new, weekly Mid-City Green Market will make its debut at the regular spot (3700 Orleans Ave.) Thursday, April 17 from 3:00 p.m. to 7:00 p.m. Market regulars will recognize some familiar faces among the vendors, including Pete and Clara Gerica, Mizell Farms, Paul's Palate Pesto, VooDough Bakery, Kristin Essig of NOLA Bean, Taylor's Happy Oaks Farm and many more.

If the past is any guide, the gathering will invariably spill over into Smith's shop, which is quickly reclaiming its place among the city's best purveyors of fine wines and spirits. Cork & Bottle has a great selection of wine, an extensive cheese selection and a knowledgeable staff who can pair you up with the right bottle.

Although the new market will not bear the Crescent City Farmers Market banner, marketumbrella.org will provide technical assistance and structural oversight. And we encourage Market regulars to support this new effort.

We are very excited to see the revitalization of this public space and the opportunities the Mid-City Green Market will create for our vendors, customers and the Mid-City neighborhood at large.
