Market, February 15, 2011 | 9 am - 1 pm
Students from Waldo Burton Memorial School join the market as guest vendors this Tuesday. As part of the Cultivating Communities program at Longue Vue House & Gardens, the students have been studying gardening, philanthropy and entrepreneurism. This Tuesday they'll sell the vegetables and herbs they've grown at Longue Vue, and donate the proceeds to a non-profit organization of the students' choice. Please join us in welcoming these budding growers and entrepreneurs to the market, and check out their winter crop.

The warmer weather this week promises is causing some serious Spring fever. In a week or two, Jim Core will start planting Silver Queen corn, which he hopes to have ready for the market by tax day. For now, Jim has greenhouse tomatoes and lettuce for salads, and brussel sprouts which make a delicious raw side dish or salad when shaved and tossed with toasted nuts, shaved Pecorino and lemon vinaigrette. Even though we still have a few more weeks of winter, we're eating like it's Spring this week!

With temperatures starting to warm, it's time to start drawing up our Spring garden plans too. Whether the goal is a kitchen herb garden, a family vegetable garden or landscaping the yard with native plants, Jim Mizell can help. His encyclopedic knowledge of gardening in our region can save hours of research and lots of money spent on plants that aren't well suited to our area or certain conditions. Stop in and chat with Jim this Saturday. Fingers crossed that most of the cold weather's behind us and we can start gardening in warm sunshine soon.
