Categories: Market News Date: Mar 24, 2011 Title: Mirlitons Are Growing!
We are pleased to report that the Adopt-a-Mirliton project has been transplated into a free-standing organization: mirlitons.org.
In 2008 social activist and Tulane University historian Lance Hill approached our organization to incubate his project dedicated to promoting the conservation and innovative uses of Louisiana heirloom mirlitons. We happily obliged. While we had few resources to offer this important effort, we were glad that we could provide an audience for Lance and his "mirliton liberation front" from which to cultivate foster parents for his heirloom mirlitons for home cultivation.
As you might suspect, interest in Louisiana mirlitons has been great. At one time, every neighborhood could boast vines on fences, garages, and clothes lines. After Katrina, many of this slowly dwindling stock has disappeared. Working heroically and methodically, Lance has applied his trademark verve and passion to mirliton preservation, history, recipes, and horitucultural practices that he has devoted to past civil rights and social justice scholarship.
Once housed on the Crescent City Farmers Market website, we are pleased to announce that mirlitons.org has a site of its own. Please peruse this important, tasty new organization on the local agri-culinary landscape.
