Fresh Item of the Week
Tuesday Market, May 3, 2011 | 9 am - 1 pm
In case anyone was wondering, although Cajun Grain rice grower Kurt Unkel is featured in Harmony, a documentary film on Prince Charles's work to promote sustainable agriculture, he and his wife Karen did not attend last Friday's royal wedding. Kurt has however received permission to show segments of the film during educational farm tours, which the Unkels will begin offering soon. Click here to learn more, or pick up information at Cajun Grain's table this Tuesday.
Thursday Market, May 5, 2011 | 3 pm - 7 pm
Jazz Fest, Cinco de Mayo, the arrival of early summer crops.... there are plenty of reasons to celebrate this week. While delicious, healthy soups are what immediately come to mind when we think of the Vintage Garden Kitchen, their staff also grows some amazing produce, like the leeks, radishes, string beans and fresh herbs they bring to our Thursday Market. Another reason to celebrate? There's much more on the way!
Saturday Market, May 7, 2011 | 8 am - 12 noon
There aren't any pre-11am "cubes" on the Jazz Fest schedule, so pencil in an early morning trip to the Market before heading out to the Fest. Early market shoppers have a much better shot at getting the pick of the market, including early season (and therefore not nearly as plentiful) crops like baby squash and zucchini, string beans and cucumbers from the Monica's, Tuscan kale from Jim Core and artichokes from Timmy Perrilloux.
Recipe of the Week
Montz, Louisiana vegetable grower Timmy Perrilloux estimates that there are enough artichokes in his fields to bring them for another two, maybe three weeks, so tis the season for Sicilian-style Stuffed Artichokes.
