We just finished our second week of MarketMatch and it's been wonderful to see plenty of new faces at the market. We'll continue to match SNAP (food stamp) purchases up to $25 per market visit at all CCFM locations while supplies last. During our pilot MarketMatch we saw a 600% increase in SNAP sales during the program and a 300% residual increase. And the numbers continue to rise, which means more local food being consumed, more money in local farmers' pockets and more dollars circulating in our local economy. MarketMatch is made possible by generous support from the W. K. Kellogg Foundation and the Kresge Foundation.

Tuesday Market, August 2, 2011 | 9 am - 1 pm

Uptown New Orleans | 200 Broadway Street at the River

Did you know that you can get fresh local poultry at our Tuesday Market? Joe and Jackie Dobie of Briarhill Farms have chickens, cornish hens and quail (as well as non-poultry offerings, like homemade blueberry jelly, fig preserves and bloody mary mix). Mr. Dobie's chickens are so delicious there's even a sandwich named for him (and his chicken) at John Besh's new Soda Shop. Roast a Dobie chicken and serve with seasonal market offerings for a scrumptious, locally-sourced weeknight dinner.

August brings former CCFM vendor La Divina Gelateria to the Green Plate Special tent. They kick the month off right with fresh warm weather offerings: Creole tomato gazpacho, summer vegetable quiche, blueberry salad with mixed greens, Ryals goat cheese and toasted hazelnuts, peach prosecco sorbetto, cucumber cachaca sorbetto and fresh squeezed watermelon lemonade.

Despite the recent damp weather, we've seen a terrific turnout at our Thursday market. Since it runs from 3-7 pm, it's the perfect afterwork market for all of the 9 to 5-ers. Stop by on your way home and pick up dinner: soup from the Vintage Garden Kitchen and roasted summer veggie and Ryals goat cheese sandwiches with Forte Grove's hearth bread. Yum!

Saturday Market, August 6, 2011 | 8 am - 12 noon

Downtown New Orleans | 700 Magazine Street at Girod

We kick off National Farmers Market Week a day early this Saturday with one more Marketeer summer activity. Bring the kids to make farmers market food journals and they'll receive their very own Crescent City Farmers Market reusable lunch sack to tote their locally-sourced snacks back to school later this month. Monthly Marketeer events resume the first Saturday in September.

Recipe of the Week

On a sticky July morning many years ago, beloved Commander's Palace chef Jamie Shannon rolled into the Saturday Market on his motorcycle with a team of chefs ready to transform the pedestrian Stars & Stripes watermelon into the base of this Green Market Watermelon & Summer Vegetable Salad. Years later we're still enjoying it and remembering our friend Jamie fondly.
