After taking last Saturday off for Christmas Eve, we're refreshed and ready for a full week of markets, including one this Saturday - New Year's Eve! Market staff had their annual pot luck holiday lunch last week and made all kinds of delicious dishes using local, farm-fresh items: romaneso with ricotta salata and roasted almonds; beet and blood orange salad; purple kale jambalaya; cherry tomato salad and jumbo lump crabmeat salad stuffed red bliss potatoes. Visit our Tuesday market to restock your fridge with healthy delicious market products after the holiday crush. We're lucky to have both Ponchatoula strawberries and Plaquemines Parish citrus in season right now, as well as plenty of winter greens, root vegetables, cauliflower, broccoli and much, much more. Take the time to ask the farmers their favorite ways to prepare the fruit and vegetables they grow for a change of pace as you head into the new year.

Come see what surprises the popular food truck Geaux Plates has for their last Tuesday at the market before they roll out. Last week brought butter-braised brussels sprouts and savory spoon bread, which makes a great breakfast or lunch.

In the past couple weeks we've welcomed back Heather Robertson and her sweet early variety strawberries and the Barrilloux's with their gorgeous Roma and beefsteak hothouse tomatoes. Swing by this week to see what surprises we have in store for you. And while you're there, stop in to Cork and Bottle, sample the wines offered at their weekly free tasting and pick up a bottle or two of bubbly.

Resolve to shop at the market this year and get a jump start on New Year's Eve. Start with Bayou Farms pastured chicken. Because their chickens are naturally raised on fresh pasture (each coop is moved every day to ensure happy chickens!), the poultry you buy at the market is tastier with better texture. The chickens are processed in small batches just days before the market to ensure you get the freshest meat possible. Come out and see "chicken guy" Donald Keller along Girod St. this week and see what all the fuss is about!
