Fresh Item of the Week

fresh item of the week

There are plenty of reasons to shop at farmers markets: access to the freshest food, growth for our regional economy and community building. Our favorite reason though is the opportunity to interact directly with the people who grow, catch, raise and otherwise make our food. The farmers and producers at the CCFM possess an incredible wealth of knowledge, and they're more than happy to share it. Here are a few recent shopper questions to get everyone thinking: What new Spring crops are you planting? What's YOUR favorite way to cook red Russian kale? What do you do with a blue hubbard squash?

Tuesday Market, January 3, 2012 | 9 am - 1 pm

Uptown New Orleans | 200 Broadway Street at the River

2012 brings John Bartlett of The Garden of Folsom to our Tuesday market. Last year John and his mother Nancy began selling at our Thursday market, where they've quickly grown a strong following for their pesticide-free produce and fresh cut flowers. Look for them at the entrance to the Tuesday market, just across from plant man Jim Mizell.

We're pleased to welcome Freret Street's Beaucoup Juice as the inaugural GPS restaurant for 2012. This Tuesday they kick things off with the Night Tripper (beet, orange & ginger), Rex (beet, orange, ginger, apple), Flu Buster (orange, apple, lemon, ginger, cayenne and mix to order juices, Spinach and Delicious Delachaise salads (mesclun mix with cherry tomatoes, sprouts, radishes, nasturtium blossoms and house-made vinaigrette), and carne-val (prosciutto, roasted red pepper, provolone and arugula) and revival (Swiss cheese, caramelized onion, mushroom and Creole mustard) paninis.

Thursday Market, January 5, 2012 | 3 pm - 7 pm

Mid-City New Orleans | 3700 Orleans Avenue at the Bayou

We're always excited when a vendor brings a new product to the market, so we're happy to announce that Miss Hot Tamale Mama, Pam Warner, is debuting new vegan tamales. Pam's hot tamales feature non-traditional fillings like beet and portabella mushroom, and cheese and sweet pepper in her flavorful homemade sauce. Try her newest vegan-friendly offering, black bean and corn with fresh onion and sweet peppers, this Thursday.

Saturday Market, Janaury 7, 2012 | 8 am - 12 noon

Downtown New Orleans | 700 Magazine Street at Girod

Join us at this Saturday's market for our first Marketeers event of 2012. Last year we hosted squash car races, learned about Louisiana seafood, made bean mosaics and much much more. Check in with market staff at the welcome tent to see what's in store for this year. The CCFM's Marketeers Club is open to all children under the age of 14. Guardians can register kids at the welcome tent at any of our three markets.

Recipe of the Week

It's brussels sprout season! Get there early on Tuesdays and Saturday and pick up a few baskets from Jim & Gladys Core before they're all gone. One of our favorite way to serve these little beauties is in this delicious, light Shaved Brussel Sprout Salad.
