Fresh Item of the Week

fresh item of the week

Tomatoes, tomatoes, tomatoes! The Crescent City Farmers Market now has gorgeous greenhouse tomatoes at all three of our markets. Barry Barrilleaux (Tuesday and Thursdays), Bon Vivant (Tuesdays) and Cajun Growers (Saturdays) bring the most beautiful and luscious tomatoes. Not only are tomatoes great for you (tons of lycopene, a powerful antioxidant, plus vitamins A and C), they're also a brightly flavored treat for these grey January days. Visit our greenhouse growers at any of our three markets and include tomatoes in your local winter diet!

Tuesday Market, January 17, 2012 | 9 am - 1 pm

Uptown New Orleans | 200 Broadway Street at the River

We love that Timmy Perrilloux and his more bang for your buck vegetables are in season. It's a great sight to see his truck stacked high with jumbo size carrots, cauliflower, romanesco, sweet white turnips and kohlrabi, not to mention his giant bunches of mustard greens, collards and kale. All this beautiful produce makes us want to find new creative ways to eat our vegetables. Share your favorite ways to eat your veggies on our CCFM facebook page.

green plate special

Beaucoup Juice is back for their third week at the Green Plate Special tent this week. Kick start your day with one of their specialty juices like the Night Tripper (beet, orange and carrot juice) or the Flu Buster (orange, apple, lemon, ginger and cayenne). Or pair one of their salads with either a Carne-val (prosciutto, roasted red peppers, provolone, arugula) or Revival (Swiss cheese, Creole mustard, caramelized onions and mushrooms) panini for a stick to your ribs lunch.

Thursday Market, January 19, 2012 | 3 pm - 7 pm

Mid-City New Orleans | 3700 Orleans Avenue at the Bayou

Join James Beard Award-winning TV food personality Andrew Zimmern of the Travel Channel's "Bizarre Foods with Andrew Zimmern" and WWNO "Louisiana Eats!" host Poppy Tooker as they cook up shrimp etouffee for the crowd at the CCFM next Thursday, January 26, beginning at 3pm. Tastes of the authentic New Orleans dish will be given in exchange for contributions to support CCFM community programming. Watch Zimmern and Tooker shop for ingredients directly from local farmers and fishers, then learn how to make the iconic dish. The free event will be recorded for an upcoming episode of the new MSN web series "Appetite for Life with Andrew Zimmern" and Poppy Tooker's "Louisiana Eats!" radio program on WWNO 89.9FM.

Saturday Market, Janaury 21, 2012 | 8 am - 12 noon

Downtown New Orleans | 700 Magazine Street at Girod

If you haven't been to our Saturday market lately, you're missing out! We have several Saturday-only vendors: Arthur Jones sharpens your knives while you shop; Lisa Barbato of Rivista has flaky, buttery pastries (market staff loves her savory stuffed pastries), Donald Keller of Bayou Farms has fresh pastured chickens - whole birds and cuts, including soup packs; Tad Ledet of Cajun Growers brings greenhouse cucumbers, in addition to tri-colored cherry and beefsteak tomatoes; and Paw Paw has honey harvested from his Algiers hives. Stop by the market to enjoy these Saturday-only vendors this week!

Recipe of the Week

We've got turnip greens down, but are always looking for recipe ideas for the roots. This Turnip Casserole calls for grated cheddar or Asiago, both of which are available from CCFM vendor Ryals' Dairy.
