Eating seafood during Lent is hardly a sacrifice in New Orleans - especially when it's local seafood from the fishing families that sell at the CCFM. Last year we launched our Crescent City Supported Fisheries CSF (Community Supported Fisheries) program during Lent with market vendor Pete & Clara's Seafood. It's back and even better this year. How does it work? For $100, you get six shares of a local fisher's catch (each enough for dinner for two) during Lent. Shares may include black drum, sea bream, flounder, wild caught catfish, crabmeat, soft-shell crabs, whole shrimp or peeled & deveined shrimp. Each subscription also includes an insulated CCSF market bag and recipes from local fishers and local seafood loving chefs. Sign up for a subscription from either the Gerica family or the Brandhurst family at the market by this Saturday, February 18. Or purchase your subscription online.

Last week regular Thursday market vendor Pam Warner of Hot Tamale Mama wowed us with her beef and vegetarian tamales, cheese grits, and black bean and corn salsa. This week Pam will have jumbo stuffed shells in parmesan cream, covered in red sauce, and side salads with Meyer lemon dressing. She'll also have hot tamales, custard and black bean and corn salsa packaged to go. For more tamales and delicious dinners, visit Pam at our Mid-City CCFM located at the American Can Company, Thursdays from 3-7 pm.

Mid-City New Orleans | 3700 Orleans Avenue at the Bayou

We're sad to say that Jesse Gaudet of Plant Diversity will soon be leaving us to move to Austin. The silver lining is that before he goes, Jesse wants to liquidate his incredibly diverse plant inventory by offering them at great prices. Stop by his table for succulents, vegetable starts, herbs and ornamental plants before they're all gone. Bonus: This week he'll also have hard to find mirliton plants available!

Saturday Market, February 18, 2012 | 8 am - 12 noon

Downtown New Orleans | 700 Magazine Street at Girod

The day we've all been waiting for is finally here - our annual CCFM king cake tasting! There's still time to weigh in on who bakes the city's best king cake on our CCFM Facebook page. Nominations will be taken until Wednesday at noon. Also, due to the busy parade schedule, the market will close at 11 am this Saturday. The market will also be closed next Tuesday. Happy Mardi Gras everyone!

Recipe of the Week

Market staff has a bit of an obsession with Shrimp and Grits, so much that when Cajun Grain came out with rice grits made from the brown jasmine rice, we ran home and created a special recipe including all kind of market goodies: jumbo shrimp from Clara Gerica, shiitake mushrooms from Mississippi Natural Products, butter from Mauthe's Progress Milk Barn, milk and goat cheese from Ryals Rocking R Dairy, and of course, rice grits from Cajun Grain.
