Fresh Item of the Week

fresh item of the week

Last week the marketumbrella.org board, community advisory team and staff enjoyed a delicious dinner at the home of our fabulous board president Margaret Beer. As we ate, community advisory team member and integrative nutritionist Danielle Paciera led a discussion about so called super foods. When we think about super foods, we tend to think of products like goji berries and acai berries, which come from far away places. But did you know that we have super foods grown practically in our backyards? One thing that makes these foods so super is their freshness. Keep reading to discover some of the regional super foods available at the CCFM...

Tuesday Market, April 24, 2012 | 9 am - 1 pm

Uptown New Orleans | 200 Broadway Street at the River

Did you know that there's a little green legume out there that can give you about half of your recommended daily dose of folate (a B-complex vitamin that has everything from anti-inflammatory to anti-depressive properties) and is high in fiber, iron and protein? Fava beans are natural super foods, and lucky for us, are in season right now. CCFM vendor Christine Monica mashes them with olive oil, parmesan cheese, salt and pepper for a delicious addition to pasta. Read on for a recipe that comes all the way from San Francisco for easy, filling fava bean bruschetta.

green plate special

We welcome Greg and Mary Sonnier of Gabrielle at the Uptowner back for their final week serving up exciting local cuisine at our Green Plate Special tent. We suspect they've saved the best for last with a menu of Boudindouile (andouille-stuffed boudin wrapped in puff pastry) with Honey Lavender Mustard Sauce, Spinach Rockefeller au Gratin, Cold Avocado Soup with Grape Tomato and Cucumber Salsa, and Grilled Chicken Caesar Salad. As always, Mary will surprise us with some of her decadent sweets for dessert. “Like” them on Facebook for regular updates on what's cooking at Gabrielle at the Uptowner.

Thursday Market, April 26, 2012 | 3 pm - 7 pm

Mid-City New Orleans | 3700 Orleans Avenue at the Bayou

Spring brings us full markets, longer days and blueberries! Our Thursday market now has two blueberry vendors: Strawberry grower Heather Robertson of Johndale Farm now has naturally grown blueberries, and the Chosa family of Azul Dulce is back! Blueberries are another locally available super food. Studies have suggested that these little blue pearls of health can help lower blood pressure, speed up metabolism, help lower bad cholesterol... It seems the only thing these little guys can't do is housework! Stop by our Thursday (or Tuesday or Saturday) market and pick up some blueberries to pump up your diet!

Saturday Market, April 28, 2012 | 8 am - 12 noon

Downtown New Orleans | 700 Magazine Street at Girod

Eating locally is what we're all about at the CCFM. By eating a locally-based diet, you're getting the best nutritional value from your food, keeping your dollars in our local region, and supporting our homegrown farmers, fishers and producers. It's win-win-win for all! No one knows this better than our friends at Nola Locavore, who are currently planning this year's Eat Local Challenge. This Saturday they'll offer samples of a local dish and give out information about the Eat Local Challenge in June. Stop by to see how delicious that challenge can be!

Recipe of the Week

Fava beans are nutritional power houses. Pick up a few baskets from the Monicas this Tuesday or Saturday for this Fava Bean Bruschetta - the perfect spring time, porch-sitting snack.
