New Orleans, LA - Crescent City Farmers Market (CCFM) will unveil its 2012 market token design featuring beloved Cajun cook Eula Mae Doré (1929-2008) Saturday, May 26 at 10am at its downtown location (700 Magazine St., at Girod St.). Doré, an entirely self-taught cook, and her husband Walter managed the Commissary on Avery Island, where she cooked for several generations of the McIlhenny family, friends, visitors and employees of McIlhenny Company, the maker of Tabasco® sauce. Doré was only 10 years old when her mother passed away, so she became responsible for preparing all of the family’s meals at a very young age. She later went on to cook alongside world-renowned chefs and cookbook authors including Jacques Pépin and Marion Cunningham. “Eula Mae contributed so much to Louisiana food culture, which our Crescent City Farmers Market seeks to preserve,” states CCFM co-founder Richard McCarthy. “She’s is an inspiration for local home cooks, especially our youngest ones.”
Each year the Crescent City Farmers Market selects a local food hero to feature on wooden tokens that may be purchased at the market welcome tent using credit or debit cards, then spent with vendors at the market. Other local food heroes memorialized on CCFM tokens include Commander Palace Chef Jamie Shannon (1961-2001), Mississippi farmer and CCFM vendor James “Billy Corn” Burkett (1928-1995) and cooking school pioneer Lee Barnes (1951-1992). In 2011, market token sales were nearly $375,000, contributing to the three Crescent City Farmers Market locations’ combined economic impact of $10.9 million.
The new market tokens which honor Eula Mae Doré will fittingly go into circulation at the Crescent City Farmers Market Memorial Day weekend. Miniature bottles of Tabasco® sauce will be given to all shoppers who purchase market tokens. Copies of Doré’s award-winning cookbook, Eula Mae’s Cajun Kitchen: Cooking Through the Seasons on Avery Island, will be available for purchase. The book includes a collection of 100 recipes, which Doré and fellow Cajun cooking authority Marcelle Bienvenu compiled, along with joyous recollections of Doré’s life on Avery Island, her personal Garden of Eden. Free samples of Doré’s signature Pecan Tarts (recipe included in her cookbook) will also be available.
Crescent City Farmers Market (CCFM) is a project of marketumbrella.org.
