     Title: Crescent City Farmers Market Educates the Next Generation of Market Shoppers
On Tuesdays throughout the spring and summer, the Crescent City Farmers Market played host to kids from many area schools and summer camps.  During the spring, school field trips featured a presentation on Louisiana strawberries. Summer brings children from summer camps in the public school system. These visits highlight tomatoes, one of our biggest crops of the summer season.

A few days prior to the field trip, market staff visits the school or camp to prepare children for their visit to the farmers market. The staff administers a short food knowledge survey, talks about what students can expect to see and do at the market, leads a discussion about local food, and answers any questions from eager students.

On the day of the field trip, market staff welcomes the group with a short geography lesson about our regional foodshed. While at the market, the students and campers complete a scavenger hunt designed to help them interact with Crescent City Farmers Market vendors.  During their exploration of the market, they visit our outdoor classroom for a lesson on a featured seasonal fruit or vegetable, a cooking demonstration and tasting. Kids are often surprised at how much they enjoy the recipe they’ve helped prepare!

During the Spring of 2012, 282 students visited the market, and over 400 campers expected to visit during the summer.  This program is made possible by generous support from the Louisiana Department of Agriculture and Forestry, the W.K. Kellogg Foundation and the Ruth Fertel Foundation.
