Fresh Item of the Week
Tuesday Market, September 11, 2012 | 9 am - 1 pm
We certainly fancy pickles here at the Crescent City Farmers Market. We had a great time pickling okra at our final canning demonstration of the summer a couple Saturdays ago. It's a great year-round edition to salads and sandwiches, and an interesting replacement for traditional pickles. Short on time or need more for football season Bloody Mary's? Check with Joe and Jackie Dobie of Briarhill Farm for pickled okra and Bloody Mary mix.
Thursday Market, September 13, 2012 | 3 pm - 7 pm
While markets have been a little smaller lately as summer winds down and farmers recover from Hurricane Isaac, our Thursday market continues to bring interesting items to the table. Vintage Garden has plenty of fresh herbs, eggplant, peppers, cherry tomatoes, butternut squash and nzama (!), a ground bean that originated in Zambia. Vintage Garden staff tells us that you can boil them in their shells as you would raw peanuts, or shell and cook them. Nzama is high in protein, vitamins and minerals. Stop by our Thursday market and check out what other kinds of interesting produce Vintage Garden has to offer.
Saturday Market, September 15, 2012 | 8 am - 12 noon
The recent cooler, drier, finally Fall-ish weather has us craving dishes like pork chops with baked apples and roasted sweet potatoes. Jesse Nagle expects to have even more varieties (like Arkansas Black) of his family's north Mississippi-grown apples in the coming weeks. Check with Justin Pitts or Bill Ryals for pork chops, roasts or belly. And stock up on sweet potatoes from Indian Springs. They're some of the most flavorful we've ever tasted.
Recipe of the Week
Local farmer and longtime CCFM vendor Jim Core lost his battle with cancer Saturday, August 25th. Jim was known for many things - his unmistakable voice, his devotion to family, community and farming, his uncanny ability to predict the weather, his kindness, and the amazing kale he grew. His recipe for Kale Jambalaya will forever be one of our favorites. In Jim's honor, Domenica is offering the dish as a special at both lunch and dinner during the month of September.
