One of the more interesting looking vegetables at the Crescent City Farmers Market can be found on Tuesday and Saturday vendor Timmy Perilloux's table. Romanesco, along with its more common-looking relatives, broccoli and cauliflower, is part of the brassica family. Its spiky, fractal, lime green buds hold a great deal of vitamins C and K, along with hunger-busting dietary fiber. One of our market staff's favorite ways to serve it is lightly steamed with a simple vinaigrette and some hard cheese grated over the top.

There's nothing like a Louisiana strawberry! Serve them in a salad for a healthy entrée that's sure to please, or go the dessert route with strawberry shortcake. One thing is for certain: these beautiful berries are also good for you. Not only are they a mild anti-inflammatory, they're also super high in potassium, folate and manganese. Visit Heather Robertson (Tuesday, Thursday and Saturday markets) or Isabel Mendez (Tuesday and Saturday markets) - our opinion the real star of the Super Bowl - to get your fill of fresh, sweet Louisiana strawberries.

Join us this Saturday for our annual king cake tasting. We'll have a variety of king cakes to try while shoppers stock up for Mardi Gras celebrations - and for the rest of the week. Want to make your own king cake? Keep reading for a recipe from February GPS vendor Lisa Barbato. The market will close at 11am this Saturday so that everyone can make the parades, or avoid parade traffic on their way back home.
