Working to Keep Farmers on the Land

Fresh & Local

Last month as Rocking R Dairy ended their retail meat and dairy career, and with it their time with us here at CCFM, to focus on growing their business with wholesale accounts, we were saddened to see our dairy vendors of seven years leave. With their leaving, however, also came a feeling of optimism and excitement as well; optimism that public markets can not only help keep small dairy farmers in business but keep them thriving, and excitement at the prospect of helping another small family-run dairy not just stay in business but grow.

CCFM staff has worked hard to bring on new meat and dairy vendors in Rocking R Dairy’s absence in effort to further assist two more family run dairies obtain the same opportunities, and bring good local food to residents of New Orleans. If you’ve come out to our Tuesday or Saturday markets in this past month then it’s likely you’ve come across Country Girl’s Creamery with their fantastic cheeses, butter, grass-fed beef and pork. Now, we’re pleased to introduce the newest vendors at our Tuesday market, G&M Goat Farm. Located not too far from Country Girl’s Creamery in Wiggins, MS, G&M Goat Farm is a small family run goat dairy who you can find out at our Tuesday market every week with Goat cheeses, milk, cuts of goat and lamb meat.

With four markets running every week, we aim to do what we can to keep small family farms, dairies, and fishing families in business. Help us by doing what you can and stop by market to support these torchbearers of local food, business, and culture.

See you at market!

Pick of the Week: Marketeers Activity!

For this month’s Marketeer activity we’ll be doing arts and crafts with produce ends. From green ends to carrot tops, we’ll be making stamps from the often unused parts of veggies and decorating early Mother’s Day cards for all of our market mommas. Be sure to come on out and bring the kids!

Cooking Demo with Kid Chef Eliana!

The one and only Kid Chef Eliana is back at market with another awesome cooking demo for us this Saturday. Eliana may be young, but she’s experienced in keeping kids engaged and interested in her fun cooking demos. If your marketeers haven’t had a chance to see a Kid Chef Eliana demo yet, don’t miss this one at 10am!

Recipe of the Week

We’re thrilled to see that Johndale’s Farm has been bringing beautiful early blueberries to all four markets in addition to their strawberries and blackberries. Seeing them back at market has got us thinking of all the delicious things we like to do with blueberries, besides just eating them raw of course. Looking for something new to do with those blueberries? Try out this Blueberry Crisps recipe for a sweet seasonal treat!
