Growing the next generation of fresh foodies!

Fresh & Local

The Crescent City Farmers Market has many goals. You are probably familiar with our overarching aim to support local producers by connecting them with shoppers and chefs who love to eat fresh and local. However, we also strive to plant seeds of nutritional knowledge in the minds of New Orleans children. School groups informally drop by to shop for goodies at our Tuesday market, and children often accompany their foodie parents to all of our markets. We also connect with schools across the city to teach students about the importance of eating healthfully and seasonally, supporting local farmers and being physically active. Nothing makes us happier than stepping onto a school bus as it pulls up to our Uptown Tuesday market and asking the kids where we are today. Their energetic response is always a cry of excitement: “the farmers market!” For more information on our Meet Me at the Market farmers market field trips, email markets@marketumbrella.org.

Pick of the Week:
Edible Schoolyard

We can’t talk about educating kids on fresh fruits and vegetables without mentioning our good friends at Edible Schoolyard. We love their enthusiasm when it comes to teaching kids about growing food and turning fresh produce into delicious meals. Each month, a team of students and garden managers from one of the ESY schools comes out to sell gorgeous produce at our Wednesday market in the French Market. In the past they’ve sold a variety of hot peppers, crisp greens, tangy pickles, scented bath salts, dried herbs, and more. Come support the students this Wednesday!

PLEASE NOTE: Jazz Half Marathon

Saturday is a race day! Both the Jazz Half Marathon and the 5K begin and end at Lafayette Square at 7 in the morning. You can find a turn-by-turn map of the course with water stations and mile markers locations here. Keep an eye out for runners since the race encircles the Saturday market.

Tuesday’s Green Plate Special

Our cherished time with Red Gravy is coming to a close. This Tuesday will be their last showing of the month, and we’re excited to see what they serve up. We’ve been told that they’re going out with a bang! More gigantic meatballs? A market-inspired pasta dish? Whatever it is, it’ll be fresh and delicious so come check it out for yourself!

Recipe of the Week

We're still stuck on satsumas, and in all honesty probably will be for a while. As the season progresses, we will see oranges, kumquats, grapefruit and more; but right now it is all about the satsuma. Pick up a sack of satsumas this week for this intensely flavorful Satsuma-Brown Butter Vinaigrette, which makes use of both the juice and zest. The uses of this vinaigrette are endless, so don’t stop at salad. Let us know how yours turns out!
