Can you dig it?



Fresh & Local:

While the moisture lingers in the air and it may not feel very cool, fall is here. This change in season brings root vegetables back to our tables.

Turnips - delicious, ever so hearty and versatile. Roast or even eat young tender ones raw. When they are larger cut them up and throw them in a soup or use in place of potatoes in your favorite recipe. Radishes too! Little spicy-sweet morsels, are perfect for salad and roasting. Radish greens are edible, too. Add them to salads or braising greens for a kick. Beets return and like many root vegetables, roasting brings out all their natural sugars.

Surely the return of these dirt inhabiting veggies means carrots, right? Not yet, but soon. Carrots love the cold, but luckily for us, our sandy Louisiana soil will help speed up the process. Give those another month or so. Of course, we also look towards rutabaga, potatoes, and other tubers in time. So get back to your roots and fall in love with these veggies at the market.

National Farm to School Month

October is national Farm to School month! Market Umbrella is the state lead for Louisiana in the National Farm to School Network and our partners LSU Ag and Pennington Biomedical Research Center have put together the Louisiana Farm to School Conference coming up on the 24th. If you’re a school food professional or educator interested in farm to school curriculum or school gardens, a farmer looking for new sales opportunities, a school food provider or anyone else on the farm to school spectrum or who wants to be, come join us in Baton Rouge next Tuesday to learn, network and engage!

Wednesday Market in the French Quarter Returns!

The countdown is over! Wednesday market is back in action with a stellar line up to start the party. Our returning vendors include the likes of Timmy Perilloux Produce, Mayhew Bakery, Spicy Lady Seasonings, Burg’s Bees, Blue Tara Blueberry Farm, and Four Winds Seafood. We are happy to announce our new vendors joining us this fall such as Berry Hill Farm with a hummus and flatbread cart with assorted naturally grown fall produce, Suzie Q knife sharpening, and Two Dog Farm, a young family grower of specialty produce, grown without synthetic fertilizers and pesticides. Catch us in the French Market every Wednesday from 1-5 starting this week.

for the Gericas

Help us Help Mrs. Clara’s Family

Recently, we were saddened to learn of the untimely passing of Mrs. Clara Gerica, a longtime fixture at the Crescent City Farmers Market. “Miss Clara’s Crabmeat” has been a near-constant presence on the menu of local chef of note Jason Goodenough at his restaurant Carrollton Market. On Wednesday, October 25th Chef Goodenough will be hosting a fundraiser for the Gerica family at his uptown eatery. The seven-course tasting menu will be created by Chef Jason and his team the day prior to the event at Tuesday morning market, featuring the finest and freshest ingredients from the Crescent City Farmers Market and our Gulf seafood purveyors. The cost is $110, including wine and liquor pairings ($85 with no pairings). All proceeds will go to the Gerica family.
