When the Market Gives you Lemons...

While we are currently crazed over the return of citrus to the market and the abundance of those juicy satsumas, let us not forget about the glorious lemon. Bursting with the perfect combination of tart and citrusy sweet, lemons are definitely top tier fruits. Sharp, acidic lemony flavor can complement the most savory dishes as well as mild, sweet desserts. If sour isn’t your thing, opt for a Meyer lemon. Meyer lemons do not have the same twingy tang as their common more sour cousins - boasting a sweeter, milder taste. Zest a Meyer over your salad for a bright pop of color and a refreshing aroma. Pro tip: only grate the yellow layer, which is very thin on a Meyer lemon. The white pith will add an unwelcome bitterness. Or grill or roast sliced rounds with chicken or fish. Grab a handful during your next visit to the market to dress up any meal!

Choppin’ Broccoli

With cooler weather comes the return of cruciferous veggies - also called “cole crops” - like broccoli. The first tender heads of fall broccoli at market have been beautiful the past couple of weeks. A truly versatile vegetable, and a favorite of kids, broccoli is delicious whether cooked into a stir fry or soup, or simply eaten raw in a salad or with hummus. Steamed or raw are the best ways to preserve broccoli's nutritional benefits - of which there are many! This veggie is commonly known as a super food because of its rich vitamin makeup and health benefits. Broccoli is a great source of fiber, vitamins A, C and K, antioxidants which fight cancer, calcium, iron and magnesium. Now is the season to get some fresh broccoli into your diet and give yourself a healthy, delicious boost.

Vendor of the Week:
Star Nursery

Welcome back to the market Star Nursery, a fifth generation family farm from Belle Chasse, LA. They’ll be coming with satsumas, lemons, and navels to start, and later on in the season will be bringing kumquats and grapefruit as well. The Ranatza’s started a truck farm in New Orleans after immigrating from Italy in the 1920s, but moved to Belle Chasse in the 40s and added citrus and a tree nursery to the repertoire. Come meet or catch up with the fifth generation of this CCFM staple citrus producer at the Tuesday, Thursday or Saturday market and stock up on satsumas - the season’s just begun! - and lemons for the tasty recipe of the week.
