Gearing up for the Holidays

Mirlitons are here!

This pear shaped squash generally turns up in fall, and if we have a mild winter, you might see some in springtime as well. Often served pickled or shrimp stuffed (see the recipe of the week for our favorite rendition of the latter) this vegetable also graces many a New Orleans thanksgiving table as a dressing. A native of Mexico and South and Central America, the mirliton was adopted into creole cooking in the 1700s when the city was a Spanish colony, but its popularity persisted even as the French took back over, resulting in the name change from the Spanish “chayote” to the French “mirliton”. A harkening back to the rich history of the city, mirlitons have been and remain a hearty and versatile vegetable option, and have penetrated into Vietnamese cuisine. Pomelos are back!

Pomelos are the grapefruit’s very large, less sour cousin. The consistency of the citrus segments is very similar although the pith is thicker, and while the meat of the fruit is sweet, the membrane is bitter and usually not eaten. Pomelos are a great source of vitamin C, potassium, fiber, B6 and magnesium. As with all the lovely citrus at market, it’s a good time to boost your immunity with these fruits before the holidays and cold season really kick in! Pomelos can be eaten plain or with a little sugar. They are also good in citrus based salads. Find them at the Press Street Gardens table at the Thursday market.

Holiday Prep

Time to prepare for a feast! Thanksgiving is just around the corner and the Crescent City Farmers Market has got you covered. Blue Ribbon Pies will be at the market tomorrow, Tuesday 11/14 to take orders for your holiday pie needs - Mrs. Chauvin will have her seasonal mincemeat and apple cranberry pies. Speaking of pies, Baking 504 has some new flavors - bourbon pecan and chocolate meringue. Catch her at Tuesday market uptown and Thursday in Mid City. J&D Farms is breaking bread at the Saturday market with German stollen through Christmas. Oh! And several of our vendors, like A&K Citrus and Indian Springs Co-Op, have pecans! Get them before they are gone, they are the perfect topping on sweet potato casserole or snack around the holiday table.

Book Sale

Everyone loves a good book sale! You can find the New Orleans Public Library - Mid City branch at the Thursday market this week. Bring the kids, shop for all of your dinner necessities, and grab a good book while you’re at it!

Vendor of the Week:
A&K Citrus

All hail the infamous A&K Citrus from Braithwaite, Louisiana - the heart of Plaquemines Parish. As the name may give away, Aloma & Kenneth Savastano are Louisiana citrus growers and long time residents at the CCFM. The Savastanos grow an array of navel oranges, blood oranges, tangelos, kumquats, grapefruits, mandarins, satsumas, citrus trees and more. In addition to citrus, A&K grows mustards, broccoli, pecans, and mirlitons, just to name a few. Say hello to them at the Tuesday, Thursday, and Saturday markets.
