Market Manager

Summary:

Responsible for Crescent City Farmers Market operations and MU program implementation at market; Supervises market assistants. Assists with the development and execution of outreach work to bring a diverse community to the Crescent City Farmers Market, partnering with like-minded individuals and groups when appropriate.

Description:

This full-time staff member manages CCFM operations.

FLSA Status: Exempt

Duties and Responsibilities include the following:

80%  Manage and supervise operations for the Crescent City Farmers Market, including vendor recruitment and relations, policy enforcement, market layouts, token system and MU program implementation.

  • Working with Director of Markets, recruits tracks and responds to vendor inquiries..
  • Ensures that the CCFM and its vendors operate in accordance with the rules and regulations as outlined by Market Umbrella.  Track vendor non-compliance and issue warnings as appropriate.
  • Coordinates and participates in market set-up and breakdown..  Set-up includes coordinating market layout, taking weather and other variables into consideration, CC/EBT machine, token and market supply preparation.
  • Manages market operations, including customer service, risk management, MU program management, beverage service and merchandise sales.
  • Works with the Finance Department to reconcile market accounts and ensure that market financial systems are secure, accurate and efficient.
  • Assists with inventory management for merchandise, supplies, materials and equipment, keeping par levels and coordinating maintenance when necessary.
  • Creates opportunities to diversify and increase market customer base through the promotion of MU programs and services, such as SNAP acceptance, Market Match, Marketeer Club, and Farmers Market Prescription Program..
  • Assists with tracking and  reporting of market activities for incentive programs in cooperation with Executive Director.
  • Coordinates the recruitment, training and scheduling of volunteers, and makes sure each market is appropriately staffed with volunteers.
  • Ensures that the Green Plate Special (guest chefs and restaurants) is scheduled, promoted and managed at Tuesday market.
  • With Program Manager, schedules school/summer camp field trips, including pre-market visits, oversees preparation and execution of at market activities.
  • Plan and execute market events, including monthly Marketeer Club activities.

15%  Grows the market community through formal and informal outreach programs & activities (including flyering, representing MU at community events, fairs or other organized meetings)

  • Assists with the development and implementation of Farmers Market Bingo, WIC outreach, SNAP outreach and Meet Me @ the Market programming, tailoring to individual groups as necessary. This includes tracking, reporting and evaluating data as requested.
  • Manage CCFM social media, regularly posting on Facebook, Twtter and Instagram
  • Contributes to development of marketing and promotional materials

5%  Performs other related duties as assigned.

All issues that reduce the effectiveness of fulfilling this position must be communicated to the Director of Markets as soon as issues are known. The Market Manager will also report activities and complications during the monthly staff meetings, “stand-up” and written reports as requested.

Supervisory Responsibilities:

Directly supervises assistant market manager and ensures that their work meets accuracy and other expectations according to company policies, procedures and performance levels.  Gives direction to other staff and volunteers at market.

Minimum Qualifications:

  • College degree.
  • 2 years of work experience in retail and/or public health, social work, or other related field.
  • Knowledge of local food systems  and passion for sustainable food growing practices.
  • Self-starter with strong organizational skills, community organizing and planning; strong interpersonal and facilitation skills.
  • Ability to manage or contribute to several simultaneous projects involving diverse populations (consumers, farmers, community members).
  • Familiarity with financial concepts, budgets and credit card processing.
  • Ability to establish and maintain successful working relationships with the staff of Market Umbrella.
  • Willingness to work irregular hours, outside, in all types of weather, as necessary.

Program Manager

Summary:

This staff person will serve as a full-time program manager for Market Umbrella working specifically on several grant-funded projects that address food access through farmers market prescriptions and Supplemental Nutritional Assistance Program incentives. Market Umbrella is a 501c3 nonprofit corporation devoted to cultivating the field of public markets for public good.

Description:

This full-time position will carry out program implementation plans with Market Umbrella and its partners including; managing and conducting nutrition education to program participants, gathering qualitative and quantitative data, ensuring consistent use of evaluation protocols and program implementation methodologies, writing evaluation results for reporting to funders. This position will also assist in delivering program content onsite at the Crescent City Farmers Market and other sites such as the Ruth U. Fertel Clinic and Circle Foods Store.

Minimum Qualifications:

  • A bachelor’s degree.
  • Knowledge of standard computer applications: including word processing, spreadsheet and database software.
  • Excellent oral and written communication skills.
  • Ability to work independently and proactively.
  • At least one year of experience managing other staff and volunteers.

Preferred Qualifications:

  • Master’s degree in public health or related field.
  • Two years professional work experience in nutrition program education, qualitative and/or quantitative research and supervising data collection.
  • Experience working with priority low-income populations in health promotion programs is highly desirable.
  • Two years of experience managing staff and volunteers.
  • CITI certification.
  • Familiarity using SPSS, SAS, STATA or other statistical analysis software.

Duties and Responsibilities include the following:

65%  Plan, manage and implement program activities related to the farmers market prescription and Market Match/Circle Match initiatives. Manage relationships with enrollment and redemption sites. Oversee enrollment process for participants in the programs, coordinate the delivery of education to priority populations, conduct focus groups, key informant interviews and surveys using standardized protocols. Supervise farmers market prescription coordinator, interns and graduate student assistants as needed.

15%  Manage school groups and curriculum for Meet me at the Market. Book school field trips, special tours for groups, tastings, and develop curriculum. Provide additional curriculum ideas for program in cooking, growing, nutrition and economics. Ensure that school groups receive pre-market visit education, tastings, and take home produce.

10%  Provide staff support and management to the Crescent City Farmers Market. Process transactions at the welcome tent and assist with market set-up and break-down. Conduct special outreach in and outside of market for vulnerable populations.

5%  Develop evaluation reports based on findings from data collection. Work with Executive Director and other staff to create informative fact sheets and information for stakeholders.

5%  Other duties as assigned relative to health education and promotion.
