making the market greener

Farmers markets are good for the environment.

At the Crescent City Farmers Market, the fruits and vegetables are grown by local farms, not shipped in from California or Chile. Our small family farmers don’t raise genetically modified produce or dump tons of chemical fertilizer on their fields. Buy a bunch of carrots at the market, and it will be wrapped in nothing more than a length of twine. We don’t believe in wasteful packaging.

Everyday we try to make our market greener. Here are recent ways we’ve reduced the Crescent City Farmers Market’s environmental impact:

H20— We replaced bottled water with free, filtered tap water.
— Our hot beverage cups are biodegradable.
— Our shoppers’ old newspapers are reused to wrap shrimp.
— We clean the market with green products.
— We encourage shoppers to bring their own reusable bags.
— We’re working to replace plastic bags with biodegradable bags.
