Secretary of Agriculture Thomas Vilsak has declared August 7-13 National Farmers Market Week. This week we celebrate all the good things about farmers markets: fresh local food, community engagement, good public health and a growing regional economy. The data from our latest SEED (Sticky Economy Evaluation Device) survey shows that CCFM has an $11.2 million combined economic impact on our community. That's truly something to celebrate!

With this record breaking heat, keeping cool is a priority. Being outside more than most, farmers know all the secrets to surviving the heat - like cooling off with Florida Water, a cooling tonic made with sweet orange, lavender and clove. Mix with water and ice; soak a towel in it and place on pulse points or around the neck for a refreshing, pleasant smelling cool-down. Look around the market and you'll see many of our farmers with towels around their necks. Market staff too!

Last week's menu from La Divina Gelateria earned rave reviews. This week they aim to please again with chilled vichyssoise, slow roasted pork sandwiches with caramelized onion and fennel on homemade ciabatta, grilled peach salad over mixed greens with feta and pecans, and watermelon & hibiscus lime sorbetto for dessert.

The market is bursting with beautiful summer squash. Did you know that squash continues to breath after it's been harvested? This means that it can quickly lose flavor and nutrients if not stored properly (that is, if you don't eat it immediately!). To store summer squash, wrap it unwashed in plastic and keep it in the refrigerator. Stored this way it will keep for 5 days, giving you plenty of time to find the perfect recipe.

We hope everyone enjoyed our weekly summer Marketeer activities as much as we enjoyed doing them. As the kids go back to school, we transition back to our first Saturday of the month Marketeer activities. This Saturday marks the finale of National Farmers Market Week. Come out and tell your local farmer how much you appreciate them selling at the market. We know they appreciate all of you!

Recipe of the Week

This week's recipe for Vegan Eggplant Tomato Napoleon comes from Karma Kitchen Chef Anne Churchill, who's created a new vegan menu at Feelings Cafe. It's a great use of the bounty of eggplant and tomatoes in the market right now.
