Fresh Item of the Week

fresh item of the week

We're thrilled to announce that the Crescent City Farmers Market is one of 30 farmers markets nationwide selected by Jarden Home Brands, maker of Ball Brand Fresh Preserving Products, to participate in their summer canning educational program. What does this mean for you? Well, for starters, shoppers will have 3 opportunities this summer to participate in canning and preserving demonstrations. We're also giving away three "Canning Discovery (TM)" kits and other goodies. Visit the welcome tent at any of our three markets and ask for an entry form, or send an email to with the subject line "Canning" and your full name. (One entry per person, please.) Not only will you have the opportunity to win a canning kit, but you'll also receive coupons from Ball to kick start your canning projects. The winner of the first kit will be announced on our CCFM Facebook page on Friday June 22nd, and our first canning program be on Saturday June 23rd. Pick up your beginners guide to canning, recipe booklet and coupons to get you going at the market welcome tent. For more information visit our CCFM website.

Tuesday Market, June 5, 2012 | 9 am - 1 pm

Uptown New Orleans | 200 Broadway Street at the River

The heat is rising, which means more and more summertime vegetables. Eggplants, okra and Creole tomatoes have all made their debuts at the market. Grab some cucumbers and peppers for salads and homemade salsa. Eggplant Parmesan is a summer favorite. With this month's Eat Local Challenge underway, eating locally is a snap at CCFM.

green plate special

This month we welcome Chris Gerica, daughter of Pete and Clara Gerica, one of our beloved fisher families at market, to the GPS tent. This Tuesday she'll have a market fresh salad topped with crabmeat, sautéed fish over fresh vegetables, seafood and meat jambalaya, and boiled shrimp - plus cupcakes and strawberry lemonade for a sweet treat.

Thursday Market, June 7, 2012 | 3 pm - 7 pm

Mid-City New Orleans | 3700 Orleans Avenue at the Bayou

Did you know that goat meat is low in sodium, but high in protein? Goat milk is also a winner - full of vitamins, but low in calories. Bill Ryals of Rocking R Dairy has goat chops, lean ground goat meat, goat milk and a wide selection of goat milk cheeses at our Thursday market. This week, add something new to your table that's local, healthy and delicious!

Saturday Market, June 9, 2012 | 8 am - 12 noon

Downtown New Orleans | 700 Magazine Street at Girod

In celebration of the Eat Local Challenge, join us this Saturday for our annual cookbook swap from 9 to 11 am. Bring an old book you've already cooked your way through and exchange it for something new (to you). For more information, click here. And be(e) sure to mark your calendar for June 16 when we'll have a beekeeping discussion and demonstration with Paw Paw's Honey!

Recipe of the Week

The market's bursting at the seams right now with Creole tomatoes. Pick up a mess of them (plus zucchini, leeks, goat cheese and fresh herbs - all available at the CCFM) for this elegant Tomato, Zucchini and Leek Galette with Roasted Garlic Goat Cheese, a recipe featured in Emeril Lagasse's Farm to Fork: Cooking Local, Cooking Fresh.
