Fresh Item of the Week

fresh item of the week

You might have noticed crowds of children exploring the market on Tuesday mornings. Or maybe you've seen our white tent in the corner, where we prepare and distribute tomato and basil salad samples to the kids. These clues are telltale signs that summer camp groups are visiting the market through our Meet Me at the Market program. We love the children's interest and enthusiasm! Watch out for long lines for Amanda's popsicles. Her treats are a favorite among our young visitors. Visit our website to learn more about our Meet Me at the Market field trips.

Tuesday Market, June 26, 2012 | 9 am - 1 pm

Uptown New Orleans | 200 Broadway Street at the River

With July 4th coming up soon, plans for picnics with family and friends are starting to form. An Independence Day party isn't complete without an all-American pie! Call Ms. Frances Chauvin (a.k.a. the Pie Lady) in advance at 985.345.7515 to order one of her "patriotic" or other blue ribbon-winning pies. Weather permitting, Ms. Chauvin sells her pies at every other Tuesday market.

Saturday Market, June 30, 2012 | 8 am - 12 noon

Downtown New Orleans | 700 Magazine Street at Girod

Did you know "compost" is from a Latin word meaning "put together"? Visit our Saturday market this week to learn how to put together the right materials for your very own composting project. Instead of throwing away your food scraps, recycle them into rich soil for your garden. Join us at 9am for an engaging and useful lesson on composting by the Crescent City Compost Coalition. And while you're there, be sure to stop by Whitewood Farm's table to snag some of Anita's homemade fig jam.

Recipe of the Week

It's the start of the season for debatably the most fun fruit to eat - watermelon! Although biting into a slice and spitting out the seeds can be entertaining, you can also try this alternate way of enjoying the most-consumed melon in the US. Buy the watermelon and honey in this ingredient list from the CCFM, and use this fat-free Grilled Spicy Watermelon (recipe courtesy of the National Watermelon Promotion Board) to accompany Kay and Ray Brandhurst or Clara and Pete Gerica's fresh-caught Louisiana shrimp.
