Fresh Item of the Week

fresh item of the week

This Tuesday we kick-off our 4th season of MarketMatch, a program that aims to make fresh, local, healthy food more accessible for more members of our community, while supporting local farmers. Generous support from the W.K. Kellogg Foundation and the Kresge Foundation enables us to match up to $20 in SNAP purchases per market visit, while supplies last. Largely because of programs like MarketMatch, SNAP sales at the CCFM have increased nearly 425% since 2008 and introduced many new shoppers to the market who we love seeing support our local farmers and fishers long after MarketMatch ends.

Tuesday Market, July 3, 2012 | 9 am - 1 pm

Uptown New Orleans | 200 Broadway Street at the River

New Orleans boasts one of the top five firework displays in the nation - “Go Fourth on the River.” We can’t think of a better way to celebrate our country’s independence than enjoying the show with friends and family at a summer picnic or barbeque. Stop by our Tuesday market and pick up all of the essentials for a fresh, seasonal meal including juicy watermelons, Bill Ryals’ grass-fed lamb and goat, and Mrs. Chauvin’s famous patriotic pies!

green plate special

This Tuesday Chef Guillermo Peters of Canal Street Bistro makes his debut under the Green Plate Special tent. We can’t wait to try his Cuban and Caprese sandwiches with sides of German potato salad, quinoa salad and horchata to wash it down. Stop by the Tuesday market and help us welcome Chef Guillermo to the market, and pick up lunch while you’re there.

If you haven’t tried Vintage Garden’s prepared soups and salads, you’re truly missing out! Swing by our Thursday market and pick up a healthy meal to cleanse after any July 4th indulgences. Not only will you feel incredible after a healthy meal made with the freshest ingredients, but you can also feel great about supporting Vintage Garden’s mission to support mentally disabled New Orleanians through employment.

Saturday Market, July 7, 2012 | 8 am - 12 noon

Downtown New Orleans | 700 Magazine Street at Girod

Our “Jams, Jellies & Preserves’ canning demonstration on June 23rd was a huge success. Now we’re getting the kids involved! Bring your little ones to the Saturday market and help us mix, mash and can during our “Marketeers CAN too!” no-cook jam demonstration. Participants will go home with a small jar of their very own peach jam and the knowledge to help preserve the summer’s bounty.

Recipe of the Week

This week’s recipe for Green Market Watermelon and Summer Vegetable Salad provides a perfect way to enjoy the abundance of summer in a single dish. The recipe, featured in our CCFM cookbook, comes from the late Chef Jamie Shannon of Commander’s Palace. Pick up watermelon, greens, cucumbers, yellow squash and zucchini at the market, and try out this inventive seasonal dish.
