Fresh Item of the Week

fresh item of the week

From okra to green beans to cucumbers, we fancy pickles! Join us Saturday, August 25 from 9-11am at our downtown market to learn how to stock your cabinets with all varieties of pickles, and the best uses for them. Thank you to everyone who participated in our Discover You CAN! events this summer. We had a great time learning how to preserve summer's bounty with you. And many thanks to Jarden Home Brands, maker of BallĀ® Brand Fresh Preserving Products and to the Farmers Market Coalition for making this program possible.

Tuesday Market, August 21, 2012 | 9 am - 1 pm

Uptown New Orleans | 200 Broadway Street at the River

Last week, WWNO's Farmers Market Minute talked about the resurgence of canning and preserving, and featured CCFM vendor Anita de Boisblanc of White Wood Farms. Her jams, jellies, and BBQ sauces are a huge hit at the market. Grab a jar of one of her many varieties of pepper jelly, put over some of Ryals chevre, and voila! A delicious snack or appetizer. You can find Anita at most Tuesday and Saturday markets with a dazzling array of preserved Louisiana produce.

green plate special

If the line last week was any indication, word is spreading about Empanada Intifada's great Green Plate Special lunches! This week they'll again have Sasquash (squash and cheese), Bean-a Vista Social Club (Cuban black bean) and Mestizo (meat pie) empanadas, plus their fantastic Thai peach pie for dessert. For $2 more, add roasted poblano mac and cheese. Like Empanada Intifada on Facebook to know where else they'll be around town.

Thursday Market, August 23, 2012 | 3 pm - 7 pm

Mid-City New Orleans | 3700 Orleans Avenue at the Bayou

We know everyone's been missing Forte Grove Bakery at our Thursday market the past few weeks. We're happy to report that they'll be back at the market this week with their delicious breads and baked goods. Use their whole wheat baguette to sop up BBQ shrimp or Nur's hummus. It's great any way you slice it!

Saturday Market, August 25, 2012 | 8 am - 12 noon

Downtown New Orleans | 700 Magazine Street at Girod

We're crazy about fungus at CCFM! Mushrooms are health powerhouses, known for their immunity boosting powers. The nutritious shiitake mushroom is comparable to green beans and peas. It ranks above corn, turnips, potatoes, tomatoes and carrots in both quantity and quality of protein. Mississippi Natural Products has both dried and fresh shiitake mushrooms at our Saturday market. Add some to your next pasta dish, sandwich, omelet...the possibilities are endless, and delicious!

Recipe of the Week

Inspired to pick up some mushrooms and French bread at the market this week? We have the perfect recipe using both! Chef Anne Churchill is full of great recipe ideas, especially vegetarian ones like this Savory Mushroom Bread Pudding.
