Give the gift of local food this Giving Tuesday!

Fresh & Local

We’ve shared the great news about our New French Market venue (see more here), but that isn’t all you’ve helped us accomplish this year! We also conducted farmers market-based education for more than 2,000 children in Orleans Parish elementary schools, teaching them about where their food comes from while they meet the local farmers who offer them a taste of the season’s best fruits and vegetables. This week’s Giving Tuesday is a great way for you to help again. Your gift on Giving Tuesday will help us grow our base of shoppers in the French Market and all of our markets. To cultivate the palates of the next generation of good eaters, your help will expand our education programs for elementary schoolchildren in 2015. With your support, we will broaden our “Meet me at the Market” program for young children to align it with the new common core standards now being taught in our public schools. Together, we can do this with your donation to Market Umbrella and the Crescent City Farmers Market. Your gift is crucial and will have an immediate impact. pick of the week

Pick of the Week: Cauliflower!

This brassica is one of the healthiest foods around and lucky for us it grows in abundance in our area. High in vitamin C, folate, fiber, and flavor, you can’t go wrong picking up a head at market. Try it the traditional boil or mashed route, or roast the whole head, or even slice it and sauté for a light treat. We have cauliflower at all four of our markets, so grab a head or two this week.

Tuesday’s Green Plate Special

Canal Street Bistro is under the Green Plate Special tent and we are thrilled to have them back. This mid-city restaurant’s menu reflects the diversity of our city with both local and global influences. Come see what’s on their market menu; we know you won’t be disappointed!

Root veggies are all over market, and are perfect for this Duck and Root Vegetable Stew, courtesy of Chef Eman Loubier. Wondering where to source local duck? Try our friends at Cleaver and Co and keep your meal as local as possible. This is a hearty stew, perfect for Fall nights.
