National Farmers Market Week!

Fresh & Local

We’re celebrating National Farmers Market Week all week long! In the spirit of celebration, here are some facts to revel on while you support our farmers and fishers, courtesy of the Farmers Market Coalition.

• There are 3.5 times as many U.S. farmers over the age of 65 as there are under 35. Market Umbrella is actively recruiting new farmers to sustain the industry to the next generation.

• According to a study conducted by the American Farm Bureau, 72% of consumers know “nothing” or “very little” about farming or ranching. We’re looking to fix that!

• If Americans boosted their average daily consumption of fruits and vegetables by just one additional portion per day, it would save America more than $2.7 trillion in healthcare costs.

Farmers markets offer shoppers the freshest, most flavorful fruits and vegetables in America. Shop the market this week and enjoy baby animals, fun games and activities, and special giveaways. Thank you for supporting us at the Crescent City Farmers Market!

pick of the week

Pick of the Week:
Where are peaches?

Sadly, so long to peaches. Earlier in the year, our peach vendors said trees were filled with blooms following the mild winter. As long as there was no late season freeze, there'd be a banner crop this year! Unfortunately, then there was a late season freeze. Our producers suffered 50% crop loss with total loss of some varieties, including the later ones. As a result, peach season has come to an untimely end. We hope you were able to savor your last ones and we look forward to the Durhams and Cherry Creek Orchard's return next year!

National Breastfeeding
Awareness Month

August is National Breastfeeding Awareness Month. We’re one of 170 countries encouraging breastfeeding to improve the health of babies around the world. Breastfeeding is one of the best ways to provide nutrients to infants. The World Health Organization recommends nutritious complementary foods should be added to a baby’s diet for up to two years while being breast fed. For more information on breastfeeding programs within Market Umbrella, visit our website.
