All About Herbs

Fresh & Local:

It’s the time of the year when fresh herbs really start to flourish. As wintery cold kicks in, you’ll be able to find parsley, cilantro, many types of mint, cutting celery (a great stand in for the vegetable celery which doesn’t grow particularly well in our climate), sage, oregano, thyme and rosemary, among others. Savory, marjoram and lovage are also available for the more adventurous. You can find cut herbs or plant starts at any of our four weekly markets to use or grow your own. Not only do fresh herbs add tons of fresh flavor and color to meals which can be great this time of year when we tend toward warm and creamy, mild comfort foods, they’re packed with essential vitamins and polyphenols, which have antioxidant and anti-inflammatory properties. The lemon thyme pictured below is also a natural mosquito repellent, in case this cold doesn’t finish off those little buggers. Basil is cold intolerant but if you cover your basil plant on cold nights or bring it inside, you may be able to coax it through the winter, and have a robust bush next year.

Interested in Buying Herbs?

If you’re interested in buying your own herbs for this season, find herb starts or full fledged plants at the Saturday and Tuesday farmers markets. Southbound Gardens sells herbs on Saturdays, Mr. Mizell on Tuesdays, and for a limited time J&D Farms on both Tuesdays and Saturdays. Herbs are some of the easiest plants to grow and buying starts instead of cut herbs really gives you the most bang for your buck. Southbound Gardens’ Ian Willson, also Antigravity’s Dirt Nerd, recently wrote the article Cut and Come Again that talks about the best ways to harvest plants like herbs so that they will keep growing and providing for your kitchen!

Cultivating Communities

Longue Vue House and Gardens will be at the market Tuesday, December 12th with the students in their Cultivating Communities program. Stop by their table for goods like pineapple hot sauce, 6 inch potted edible ginger plants, greens, assorted herbs, and lemons and support this essential children’s program.

Sneaky Pickle is in the house for December. Sneaky P is an eclectic Bywater/Upper Ninth champ of a cafe. We are in for a month of an ever-changing menu of farm-fresh, from-scratch fare, including the signature “bowl of food,” a beans, grain and veg mashup. By rotating local ingredients from the likes of VEGGI Farmers Cooperative and Des Allemands Katfish, Chef Ben Tabor aims to encourage vegans and meat eaters to enjoy their meals together.

Chimichurri is an excellent way to make use of a lot of a lot of kinds of herbs. This super umami sauce is simple to prepare, and so versatile! Add it to any protein - it’s especially great on a grilled steak or baked flaky white fish, or drizzle onto soups. Or, simply rip off a hunk of crusty bread and dunk it for a simple but very satisfying snack.
