Eat Local All The Time!

As the eighth annual Eat Local Challenge draws to a close, we reflect once more on the challenge we’ve just put ourselves through and think about the abundance that this region has to offer during this month which transitions us from spring to summer. We’ve seen the end of the beets, chard, and strawberries of spring and the beginning of squash, cucumbers, blueberries, okra and melons of summer. We also reflect on the ways in which local-only sourcing removes things from our diet like coffee and bread and have maybe transitioned away from some things in a way that is uncomfortable at first, but then quickly becomes habit. Perhaps you’ve considered some of the inner workings of our food system to try to understand why some things aren’t available. Is it just seasonal, or is it environmental? What are the impacts of the global food trade that explain why we do or do not have access to certain foods? Maybe most impactfully though, is the way that when we prioritize shopping local, we throw traditional grocery shopping lists out the window, purchase peak season produce harvested when ripe, and prep, cook and eat it at home. While convenience food from snacks to meal prep is the name of the game these days, not only does the Eat Local Challenge give us more familiarity with the local food ecosystem, but it also offers a chance to conscientiously change our pace, as we meal plan with intention, and make time to cook and share meals made from whole ingredients, at home, hopefully with friends and family.

Fourth of July PIE!

Those of you who have shopped with Ms. Chauvin at the Tuesday market know that she bakes a mean pie. Well with Independence Day rolling around the bend, Blue Ribbon Pies is taking orders for delicious, seasonal patriotic flag pies. These strawberry and blueberry filled pies look and taste great, and she’s taking special orders. To reserve one for yourself come out to market tomorrow or call her ASAP! (985)320-1188.

Bangin’ Chunes

This week’s music is presented by the New Orleans Musicians Clinic (NOMC) - catch them out at the CBD market this Saturday. Music at the Market is made possible by our new Community Partnership with the New Orleans Musicians’ Clinic, New Orleans Jazz and Heritage Foundation, the French Market Corporation and support from market patrons like you. We believe that, like food, music is an integral part of building community in our market spaces. This week, stop by the Mid-City market for some fresh tunes by Bad Oyster Band, the CBD market for a performance by Scott Stobbe, and the Rivertown market for Spider Murphy.

Opportunities at Market Umbrella!

Interested in working for Market Umbrella? Through Serve Louisiana we are searching for an Outreach and Social Media Coordinator. The Outreach and Social Media Coordinator will plan, organize, and implement community outreach for the CCFM App. Serve Louisiana members work from September 1st through July 31st.

Volunteer Opportunities

Market Umbrella is also seeking volunteers on July 3rd from 9-1 and 1-5 and on July 5th from 7:30-11:30 and 10:30-2:30. On Tuesday, we’ll be prepping produce boxes for a big event on Thursday, and on Thursday, we’ll need help at the event itself. If you are interested please contact info@marketumbrella.org. A seasonal produce box featuring blueberries, squash, eggplant, cucumbers, cherry tomatoes, sweet potatoes, peppers, and honey will be provided for each volunteer.

Louisiana Growers Co-Op

The newly formed Louisiana Growers Co-Op consists of 2 Acre Farm from Marrero, LA, Stoney Point Farm from Stoney Point, LA and Triple Eaton Farm from Mt. Olive, MS. You’ll find these guys at Saturday market with specialty produce, all grown without synthetic fertilizers or pesticides. In addition to eggplant, squash, and cucumbers, you’ll find fresh herbs, honey, turmeric and more at this table. Early season figs are now in, with watermelon soon to come. Enjoy creole tomatoes from the field now before the season is over, and hydroponic heirloom tomatoes all year long. Come visit Elvia Chauvin on Saturdays at Rivertown at this vendor stall and you’ll quickly make friends with a local farmer, beekeeper and co-op operator!

Tuesday’s Green Plate Special:

South of Eden

Last week to catch South of Eden at the GPS tent this month. Founded in the belief that food should be tasty, satisfying and nourishing, everything on offer is created to be just that. As the Green Plate Special vendor, we’ll be treated to breakfast and lunch made from entirely whole ingredients (SOE uses no commercially processed foods, although she makes her own nut milks and cheeses, nut and grain flours, etc.), locally sourced when possible. Starting next week, SOE will have their own vendor stall within the market where you can pick up vegan breads, sauces, cheeses, dips, jams, ferments and more at the Tuesday Uptown Market. What a great addition to the market!

Watermelon Sangria

Summer is officially here and so are watermelons! What could be more refreshing than a cold, sweet, crisp watermelon on a hot, sticky day? Watermelon... sangria! Perfect for sweatin’ it out by the pool, backyard, or on your couch while you binge watch Netflix for the entirety of 11 seasons of Parts Unknown. Grab a ripe one from Timmy Perilloux (Tu/W/Th/Sa CDB) or Indian Springs Farmers Association Co-op (Tu/Th/Sa CBD), or LA Growers Co-Op at Rivertown and check out this 3 ingredient recipe from Pioneer Woman. All you need is watermelon and booze, but you should add some mint for extra freshness!
