Fresh Item of the Week

fresh item of the week

By this point in the season we're ready for cooler temps and more book recommendations after having powered through our summer reading lists. One of our longtime Tuesday market volunteers, Douglas Westgate, recently teamed up with his colleagues at Octavia Books to create a local food enthusiast reading and reference list. There are books on food and drink, gardening and other general recommendations for folks of all ages. Thanks, Octavia Books!

Tuesday Market, August 23, 2011 | 9 am - 1 pm

Uptown New Orleans | 200 Broadway Street at the River

School is back in session for most of the city and we know that means that students, parents and teachers are super busy. Come to the market and pick up something for a quick dinner. A container of Paul Arceneaux's pesto and a pack of Clara Gerica's hand-peeled shrimp are all you need if you have pasta in the pantry. Or pick up Mediterranean dishes from Nur's Kitchen if you're not even up for turning on the stove. Toss a salad of Jimmy Hadden's hydroponic greens, slice David's Hoppenstadt's Asian pears for dessert and you've got a quick, healthy meal.

green plate special

La Divina is back under the Green Plate Special tent this Tuesday with chilled garlic almond soup with fresh cantaloupe balls, marinated summer vegetable salad, Italian sausage and pepper sandwiches on homemade ciabatta, pineapple limeade and Asian pear-ginger and plum-beaujolais sorbetto.

Thursday Market, August 25, 2011 | 3 pm - 7 pm

Mid-City New Orleans | 3700 Orleans Avenue at the Bayou

Even though it's still a little warm out (to say the least!), it's about time to start planting the fall garden. Jesse Gaudet brings a beautiful selection of plants to our Thursday market, as well as expertise. Come by and chat with him about what to plant now to keep things looking good in the garden for months to come.

Saturday Market, August 27, 2011 | 8 am - 12 noon

Downtown New Orleans | 700 Magazine Street at Girod

It's apple season... or at least it is in Mississippi. Jesse Nagle of Cherry Creek Orchards in Pontotoc, MS has beautiful red and golden delicious apples. Stop by and pick up a sackful for snacks, salads and desserts. We love baking them with pork chops for dinner. Check with Bill Ryals of Tylertown, MS or Justin Pitts of Ellisville, MS for some tasty Mississippi pork chops to go alongside those Mississippi apples.

Recipe of the Week

What do New Orleanians do with apples (now in season and available at the CCFM... but not for much longer!)? We make Apple Beignets, of course. And we add a little dark rum to the batter.
