Fresh Item of the Week

fresh item of the week

Like most leafy greens, many of us don't do too well in the late summer heat. Luckily, in Louisiana we have some crops that are hardy enough to survive our sweltering summers. Tomatoes, okra, peppers and eggplant love the heat, and we love seeing them at the market. As those with backyard gardens have probably noticed, August can be a tough growing month. This is why you won't see many leafy greens (besides that workhorse, kale!) at the market. Fret not, however, they're coming! Seeing the full cycle of our local growing season is one of many wonderful benefits of being a farmers market shopper.

Tuesday Market, August 14, 2012 | 9 am - 1 pm

Uptown New Orleans | 200 Broadway Street at the River

It's summertime, which means we're all craving cool treats. An easy, delicious one is homemade ice cream. With local milk available from Progress Milk Barn and Ryals Rocking R Dairy, you can make ice cream in no time. Whole milk, with its high butterfat content, is best for ice cream. Try making ice cream using Ryals goat milk for a tangier flavor. Check out these recipes from Southern Living and give homemade ice cream a try this week!

Did you know that the word empanada comes from the Spanish word empaƱar, meaning "to cover in a pastry case"? Last week, Empanada Intifada introduced the market to their innovative empanadas, and we're excited to have them back. This week they'll have Sasquash (squash and cheese), Bean-a Vista Social Club (Cuban black bean), Mestizo (kind of like a meat pie), and their fantastic Thai peach pie for dessert. Need more? For $2 more, add roasted poblano mac and cheese! Want to know where else their truck will be? Check them out on Facebook.

Thursday Market, August 16, 2012 | 3 pm - 7 pm

Mid-City New Orleans | 3700 Orleans Avenue at the Bayou

Last week, we had beautiful fruit from Mississippi grower Jesse Nagle at our Thursday market - peaches, apples and watermelons. Stop by this week and get your fruit fix - just be sure to come early. Jesse tends to sell out early. We love pairing his apples with basil and honey spread on baguette or over yogurt. Fresh and delicious!

Saturday Market, August 18, 2012 | 8 am - 12 noon

Downtown New Orleans | 700 Magazine Street at Girod

It's back to school time! We know that staying hydrated is important for brain-power and memory, so we're giving away stainless steel CCFM water bottles to all Marketeers. Not yet a Marketeer? Any child from age 0-14 is welcome to join our kids club. Special events once a month and a $5 token for your birthday... Why wouldn't you sign up? Stop by the welcome tent, grab a water bottle and let us wish our youngest market shoppers a fun, successful 2012-2013 school year.

Recipe of the Week

Want a new spin on ice cream? Try this Frozen Creole Cream Cheese. Before its resurgence in the early twenty-first century, Creole cream cheese was either eaten with a little cream and sugar or salt and pepper for breakfast, or served frozen as dessert. Top with fresh peaches or drizzle with honey for some added pizzaz.
