Fresh Item of the Week

fresh item of the week

Let's talk about yogurt. Not only is it a delicious, versatile snack, it's also a CCFM-available superfood with beneficial microbes, easily absorbable nutrients such as calcium, iron, riboflavin and iodine, and the heavy hitter - live active cultures. These cultures help keep the "natural flora" (actually trillions of microbes), which resides in our digestive tracts, healthy. Collectively, these microbes regulate all kinds of bodily functions – digestion and metabolism, moods, allergies, immune functions and cholesterol levels. This balance of microbes in our guts affects virtually every aspect of our health. Eating foods that contain live active cultures has been shown to help those suffering from constipation, reflux and heartburn, lactose intolerance, IBS, crohn's disease, colitis and food allergies, as well as fungal and intestinal infections. Having healthy natural flora may even contribute to better weight control. Pick up this amazing superfood from Rocking R Dairy (Tuesdays & Saturdays) and Mauthe's Progress Milk Barn (Tuesdays). * Information courtesy of CCFM shopper Danielle Paciera, LDN RD, CCN, a Licensed and Board Certified Integrative Nutritionist who practices here in New Orleans. green plate special

Last week, Chef Nick from a Mano blew us away with his GPS menu. Our favorite was his goat sausage with satsuma marmalade. We're equally excited about this week's menu: strawberry glazed pork skins, green salad with kumquats and pinenut brittle, marinated shrimp with farro and winter squash, roasted pork sandwiches with provolone and rapini greens, and cannoli with truffle honey and candied pecans.

Thursday Market, December 13, 2012 | 3 pm - 7 pm

Mid-City New Orleans | 3700 Orleans Avenue at the Bayou

As we come in to the holiday party season, we all find ourselves in need of the perfect gift for the hostess (or host) with the most-tess. Some of our market staffs' favorites include DIY gifts of local grapefruit-strawberry marmalade, room brightening sunflowers from Bartlett Farm, a dinner gift basket with soup from Vintage Garden Kitchen, artisanal bread from Forte Grove, salad greens from the Core's and fudge from Lana Mayer. For an extra special gift, add market tokens and a CCFM market schedule. What are your go-to farmers market gifts? Share your ideas on our facebook page.

Saturday Market, December 15, 2012 | 8 am - 12 noon

Downtown New Orleans | 700 Magazine Street at Girod

Last call for locally-raised chicken soup, chicken dumplings, roasted chicken... Well, you get the idea. Start stocking up on pastured chicken from Bayou Farm because they're taking a break for the winter season starting December 29nd. Bayou Farm uses high quality shrink bags to protect against freezer burn, so their birds will retain their quality all through the winter.

Recipe of the Week

Tireless volunteer and renowned gourmet cook Martha Hart passed away in Baptist Hospital during the days following Hurricane Katrina. Months later, we were thrilled to find a copy of Martha's Microwave Lemon Curd recipe, personally written out by her. It makes a cheery homemade gift and is an instant, elegant dessert when spooned into a baked tart shell.
